Chapter 10
Chapter 10
Edward didn't know Vincent very well, nor did he trust him very much.He suspected that the young man he met in the woods had something to do with Vincent, but he didn't know whether he should ask him face to face.
In the end Edward decided to inform Baron Holder first.
Baron Holder seldom went back to the manor, Edward asked Almina and Vivian about his whereabouts, and decided to find him by himself.
Vivienne has already started to help Almina with the housework. She acted swiftly and fired the maid who was gossiping, and even asked the housekeeper to find someone to marry them to a local gambler. "I want them to know that if you can't fulfill your duties as a servant, you will definitely taste the bitter fruit you made." Edward saw Vivienne touching Anna's face, and taught: "You are from the Holder family. Miss, you are countless times nobler than those people. You should punish them for their mistakes, instead of running out by yourself and worrying us."
She's doing well, just as Mary did back then.
Almina also agrees with Vivienne's approach. Now she mostly goes to look after Mary and Anna, or reads by herself. "Uncle Edward, everything is well with us now," said Almina to Edward. "You don't have to come here all the time. It's so hot that you'll get sunstroke."
As for the fact that their father never came home, the two ladies didn't care too much.
"I don't know where he will be. But it's always those places. You can go to Thomas Manor to have a look. The gentlemen here like to go there to please the Duke." Vivienne said very directly, and Almina gently pulled He gave her a hand, but didn't stop her.
Edward sighed: "If possible, I will try my best to bring the baron back."
Neither of the ladies, however, had much hope for that.
Edward came out of Holder Manor and wanted to go to Thomas Manor. On the way, I met some gentlemen. They told Edward that the Duchess was not well, and they left early.
Edward asked them about the whereabouts of Baron Holder, and several gentlemen laughed meaningfully. "My lord? He's at Mrs. Green's."
Mrs. Green is well known locally. She was a gentleman's daughter, married a rich merchant, and when her husband died, she got a lot of money. But money will run out sooner or later, Mrs. Green is sure of that. She has no children, but has adopted many little girls and brought them up, calling them her own daughters, but she is actually a courtesan.
Many gentlemen have been at Mrs. Green's villa.Edward had been there twice for some reason, and Mrs. Green had a good impression of him because he was willing to spend money and never touched the girls. On the other hand, Edward has been probed whether he likes young boys. This made Edward very terrified, so he never went again.
Now I can't care about these.
Knowing that Edward was going to Mrs. Green's place, the gentlemen expressed their willingness to go with them. They went in together, and were warmly welcomed by Mrs. Green. "Oh, Mr. Hunter! Oh, Mr. Miller!..." She exclaimed exaggeratedly, and ushered the gentlemen in.
Edward stood at the end with some embarrassment, and Mrs. Green saw him. "Oh my god, it's you, Mr. Brook!" She squeezed her fat body and came to Edward, "How long has it been since you came, Lily misses you so much, she's sick, lovesick!"
She shook her fan quickly, and winked at Edward ambiguously: "Or, you prefer my proposal last time. I know many young people who are healthy and handsome. If you need them, they are always available for you Serve."
This topic was so dangerous that Edward had to interrupt her: "No, no need. Mrs. Green, I'm just looking for someone today. Is Baron Holder here with you?"
"Of course, the Baron is in the small living room." Mrs. Green led Edward to go inside. "He has had a hot fight with Daisy recently... That's right!" Mrs. Green closed her fan.
"Do you know Mr. Thomas? The young one. He's in there too."
Edward stopped in his tracks.
His face became very ugly, which startled Mrs. Green. "My God, Mr. Brooke, what's the matter with you?"
"It's all right, Mrs. Green." Edward smiled reluctantly, his face was frighteningly pale, as if crawling out of a grave.Mrs. Green couldn't help recalling what she said just now, took a breath, and asked in a low voice: "Oh, Mr. Brooke, are you doing this because of Mr. Thomas..."
"No, of course not...I mean...no..." Edward explained in a panic. Just now he heard Baron Holder and Vincent gathered together, and suddenly wondered if there would be something between them A dark secret. At that moment, he thought of the two workers he met in the forest, Mary's illness, and Vincent's sudden feelings for him.Too many things filled his mind, as if something connected them all together.
Edward didn't know any great truth, but this series of events made him feel inexplicably terrified.
Mrs. Green thought elsewhere. "Oh, poor man." She was full of sympathy, touching Edward's face like a mother. "Would you like to take a break? Have some tea or something."
Edward was very grateful for Mrs. Green's warmth, but still shook his head.He walked to the small living room alone, stood still, and opened the door.
In the small living room, there were several ladies and several gentlemen. One of them, Lucy, was standing by the piano singing, and when Edward entered the door, she was singing: "The clown in the palace is king, and pleasure is the king's law."
Beside Lord Holder sat several girls, half undressed, showing white breasts and round arms.Seeing Edward coming in, they didn't panic, but giggled, as if they saw something interesting.
On the other side, sat a few young men smeared with makeup, with delicate features, wearing shirts with large necklines and playful vests. They surround a person, as women in a palace surround their emperor.
That was Vincent.
"Oh, it's Edward." Baron Holder greeted lightly.A girl came up to hold Edward's hand, but Edward quickly avoided it.Unexpectedly, Baron Holder thought he was just pretending to be reserved, and drove all the girls around him to pull him.The girls laughed and dragged Edward around, rubbing their bare breasts against his arms and touching his chest and buttocks.
Edward didn't want to be rough on the lady, so he dodged in embarrassment.Baron Holder laughed out loud, and said teasingly: "Oh, sir, it seems that women's soft bodies and beautiful faces are not tempting to you. George, you go up! Hurry up and send our new guest Please come here."
The girls backed away with a laugh, and were replaced by a few men dressed in trendy clothes. They surrounded Edward, teased wantonly, and even touched his lower body without hesitation.Edward, trembling with rage, had never been so offended before, and slapped the nearest man hard.
The scene suddenly fell silent.
The singing stopped, and the laughter also stopped.Baron Holder wanted to say something, but Vincent stood up, and several men moved out of the way.
He stood in front of Edward.
Edward was panting, his hair and clothes messed up, and he looked pitiful.Vincent raised his hand to touch his face, but was avoided.
"Don't touch me," Edward said coldly.
But Vincent was stubborn to touch Edward, to touch his face, his hair, to lift his chin.Edward struggled for a while, but Vincent said, "Don't move, let me see you."
It seems so affectionate.
Edward only felt that he was ridiculous, but also felt that the person in front of him was very hateful. He was cornered by Vincent, and couldn't help but slapped him backhanded.
"Enough, sir!"
He snapped, almost unable to maintain the gentlemanly demeanor that he had persisted for many years.
Vincent's face was thrown to the side, and his hair was scattered across his face.
Hardly anyone dared to say a word.
After a while, Baron Holder spoke hesitantly, wanting to make a garden.
"Well, Edward, this is..."
However, before he finished speaking, Vincent suddenly raised his head and punched Edward in the stomach. In just a second, Edward bent down in pain and was thrown onto the sofa by Vincent.
"...You're wrong..."
Baron Holder watched all this happen in a daze, and finished what he had just said.
