Chapter 128: The Pits!
Chapter 128: The Pits!
The downpour of rain was worse than they thought it would be. Allison was called in despite the rain because the pits were flooding.
Allison was given a raincoat so she could move freely in the rain without any worry of getting wet.
They rushed to the pits and saw that it was filled with zombies. It had only been a couple of hours so they were surprised why there were so many zombies.
It was almost like they could smell them, Allison wasn’t worried because the kind of zombies that had filled the pit were the typical ones.
The weakest of the weak, they could handle them.
The pit flooding meant that they would be washed up to the surface, this was the flaw in their defence system but even with that, they couldn’t scale their defence.
Allison was given a spear, this allowed her to strike from range without letting them come too close.
She looked around her and was surprised by how organized they were, individually they might not be much but together, they were frightening.
"You’re doing pretty good, people usually freak out on their face day," A man said beside her.
She looked at him, he was in his early twenties and still had that youthful energy around him.
Allison didn’t have the energy nor interest in having a conversation with him.
She pretended not to hear him and kept on spearing away at the zombies that had managed to make it out of the pit.
Allison’s spear made contact with one zombie but it had narrowly missed its target, it was stuck at the zombie’s neck and the fact that the zombie fell back into the pit inadvertently yanked Allison forward.
This brought her closer to the other zombies, she knew she had to hold on to the spear, frantically struggling to get it loose but luckily for her, the man she had just ignored came to her rescue.
He used his spear like a sword, swinging it across to slice open their heads and Allison was able to free her weapon in that time by slicing the zombie’s head open vertically.
"That was a close one!" The man exclaimed but Allison didn’t think much of this.
This was nothing, she could have easily handled herself but she didn’t want to give herself away.
Allison had to play the role and she had every intention of doing just that.
She looked back at the blonde man and had a big smile on her face.
"Thank you! You saved my behind," Allison thanked him and the man was happy with what he had heard.
"Hahaha! No problem," The man said with a flustered smile.
Allison felt disgusted that his man thought he saved her but it couldn’t be helped.
A man’s ego is a dangerous thing but it was exactly why it was so easy for women to manipulate.
A man will always view a harmless girl as one incapable of harming or manipulating, making that very thought a product of manipulation.
"The best manipulation tactic is vulnerability," Allison thought to herself.
Allison returned to his side and she knew that this was just the beginning because now the man would feel like she was indebted to him.
Allison knew she would be seeing a lot more of him around as they kept up with their formation.
This was something that had never happened before as the zombies have come when it rained but in much smaller numbers.
They were preserving their ammunition and knew that they had to keep things controlled.
They couldn’t let it get out of hand but a scream soon echoed from their left which prompted them to immediately jerk their head in that direction.
"What?" Allison thought and she noticed that the zombies that were coming out of the water were the bloated zombies that secreted liquids that had the potential of turning humans into one of them in minutes.
Allison looked and realized that it had managed to touch a few of the people around but they didn’t look worried about this.
"Ha! It looks like even zombies vomit at the sight of you," The man beside her teased the person who was afflicted,
Allison didn’t understand how they found this funny considering what came with it.
"What is that thing even? I have never seen one like it!" Another person said and then it clicked.
They had never encountered this zombie before, this explained why they were so casual about it.
Allison had two choices, warn them about the threat to come or keep her mouth shut so she doesn’t risk getting exposed as this would come with questions.
Allison chose the former, they needed to experience the horror themselves because something told her that they were far too relaxed when it came to zombies.
And then it happened, the person that the stuff spilled on dropped to his knees.
"Come on! It’s not that bad..." They teased, they managed to put down the zombie that was the cause but Allison noticed that there was something strange in this transformation.
The man on the ground, his hands first deformed and this made everyone take a few steps away from him as they didn’t know what was happening.
Then his body became twice the size, his skin was stretching like rubber ultimately tearing.
"This one... It’s different!" Allison thought to herself and she was right because the shape it took only made his stomach become tripe its size alongside his neck, the tear allowed purs to spill forth from it.
The stomach kept swelling and someone had to stick a spear right in his head because they knew that the zombies had somehow affected him.
They thought this would be enough to kill him but they had slightly missed the brain.
This triggered some sort of change in the zombie, the stomach began to make noise before ultimately imploding.
This was like a grenade and the substance painted everyone within a certain radius.
Things went from bad to worse in the blink of an eye.
Allison however didn’t want to disclose anything even though the situation called for it.
She was out of range of the explosion, it spilled on almost everyone even the man who was talking to her previously.
"Everyone fall back!" A man said; this was clearly the one that led them.
He couldn’t believe what he was seeing but Allison was sure that this might be her chance to gain some sort of importance.
She noticed how much they liked bravery and this was part of the reason that Jason was so respected.
Allison fell behind the wall and it was barricaded, the thing about this was that the zombies couldn’t cross or breakthrough due to their numbers but with the water there, it only meant more zombies would be drawn.
Allison noticed that the man in charge was calm and collected, this didn’t faze him.
"Nick! What’re we supposed to do right now?" A lady barked but Nick remained silent.
All he did was raise a finger and people with bows and arrows mounted the walls.
"I wouldn’t advise that," Allison said and this caught Nick’s attention.
Nick had a buzz cut with a stone-cold face, he looked like someone who had been through hell and back.
"They explode upon death. If you do that, we don’t know what will happen and if it will get into the walls," Allison said.
Nick considered this for a moment, he was impressed that Allison was calm in such a stressful situation. Most of them were panicking because this was the first time that they had encountered such a zombie.
"Sir! We’re waiting for your command!" The archers said but the man raised his finger, he wasn’t ready to take this leap, at least not before hearing Allison out.
"What do you suggest we do?" Nick asked and Allison knew this was some sort of test.
Allison looked around and realized that she had to take a bold step here.
"We need to draw them away and eliminate them," Allison said but she was clearly distracted, she was looking around for something.
"Give me that," Allison said to one of the archers and they looked to Nick for approval.
Nick, with a single gesture, gave her permission and Allison sighed the moment the bow and arrow was given to her.
Such an archaic weapon to use in modern times but they were preserving ammunition and using gunfire would do more harm than good.
Allison didn’t know what the zombie’s substance was capable of doing outside transforming humans into zombies.
Luckily for her, she wouldn’t need to find out because the rain was washing the substance off the walls and into the ground; if this would be enough was to be seen.
Without warning, Allison jumped down from the wall and during her descent, the zombies responded by spewing spitballs from their mouths.
Allison was in midair so what she could do was limited and the spitballs hit their target.
"That fool... What was she thinking..." Nick muttered but before he could tell his archers to fire, Allison landed on the ground with no sign of fatigue.
Allison had curled up into a ball, burying her head into her lap right before it made contact, her raincoat was her saving grace.
Allison sliced one of the zombies right through the head, she knew that the only reason the other imploded was because they had missed his brain and that triggered some sort of reflex action.
Allison wanted to test this theory with her body because this would make her come off as selfless, an act that would help elevate her status.
"Don’t miss it! Shoot their brains!" Allison instructed Nick and the man was amazed but he also knew he had a job to do.
He gave the archers permission to shoot and the arrows pierced right through their brains, killing them.
Allison took a deep breath and looked up but the look she got made her realize that she wasn’t about to get the same attention as Jason because what she got was suspicious glares.
There was no way she hadn’t done this before and Nick was now wary of her.
