Chapter 134: Save A Life!
Chapter 134: Save A Life!
Rachel left the house for her job, she couldn’t believe the conversation that she just had with her younger sister but if Lillian could discern this much then maybe she wasn’t as subtle as she thought.
Rachel walked into the building and it was a lot cleaner than it was the day before but this wasn’t the only new thing.
"Isn’t that....’ Rachel questioned, she couldn’t believe what her eyes were seeing but it was Josephine in clothes that looked like rags.
It then hit Rachel as to why things were so awkward yesterday when the doctor walked in.
It was because Rachel was doing her job but Rachel didn’t look pissed by this thought.
Josephine caught her gaze but tried to break eye contact.
"Good morning ma’am," Rachel said to which Josephine raised her head.
"Ma’am?" Josephine responded involuntarily, she didn’t expect such a title from someone who was going to rank higher than her.
"I hope to learn a lot from you," Rachel said, bowing her head in respect.
Josephine was speechless because everything she thought about Rachel was wrong.
She thought she would be a proud lady but Rachel was everything but prideful.
"You can’t learn from me, I’m just a cleaner," Josephine said with a defeated look on her face.
She hated that she didn’t have much to offer and judging from the look of the room yesterday, she wasn’t doing such a great job here either.
But that had clearly changed seeing as the makeshift hospital was sparkling clean prompting Rachel to question if she was the only one taking care of this place.
"I didn’t even know I was capable of cleaning something so horrible without losing consciousness," Rachel said, shaking her head in disbelief.
Josephine giggled, she was glad that Rachel didn’t hold it against her.
"I was surprised too but that was a bitchy thing to do and I’m sorry..." Josephine apologized.
The fact that she acknowledged what she did was wrong was enough of an apology for Rachel.
"What’re you apologizing for? How’s the patient?" Rachel asked, changing the conversation.
"He is responding well to treatment but the doctor isn’t sure if he would make it through this, his organs might have received too much damage," Josephine said.
Rachel was surprised she knew so much because as she said, she was just the cleaner.
"I eavesdrop a lot," Josephine added, showing that she noticed Rachel’s surprised facial expression.
"I figured..." Rachel teased her but their conversation was cut short when the man that flirted with Rachel a day before entered the room.
"Hello, ladies..." The man greeted them and Josephine rolled her eyes.
"I will see you around Rachel," Josephine said.
Rachel was surprised by her reaction but it was clear that these two might share some sort of history.
Rachel wasn’t interested in finding out what it was because she had no interest in the man.
"Josephine, she is always like that," The man brushed it aside, he wasn’t offended by her reaction.
"Let me guess, you flirted with her too..." Rachel said, trying to force a reaction.
"Hahaha! What do you think I am?" The man said but Rachel knew he had no plans of backing down and there was no need for any unnecessary friction, this was the only reason she was playing along.
"You haven’t even introduced yourself to me," Rachel said and the man grinned the moment he heard this.
"You’re interested enough in me to know my name?" The man asked, taking a few steps towards Rachel who didn’t move back.
"Get over yourself, what job is available for me to do here?" Rachel changed the topic because she didn’t want to feed into his ego.
"Doctor Charlie isn’t around today so I will be handling his affairs. Go get changed, I will need your help," The man said and Rachel was glad that this was the role she was being given.
This meant that she could learn faster but she had to be a lot closer to the man because if he had this much expertise to become a substitute doctor, then he must be important as doctors were hard to come by.
"Doctor Mathias, we have a new patient and he is badly hurt!" A man called out urgently and Mathis’ whole demeanour changed.
Not because Rachel got his name but because of the call of a new patient.
He didn’t say another word to Rachel and rushed in because it sounded like an emergency.
This single act impressed Rachel, he wasn’t some ignorant jerk who saw himself as the center of the universe but he showed genuine care for human life.
Rachel knew he might need help and she rushed in to get changed as soon as possible.
She couldn’t waste time and she did so in under five minutes.
The scrubs there were of varying sizes but they were all neatly folded and placed on a table.
Rachel entered the room and saw Mathias trying to hold the man down, he was injured badly.
"Quickly! Get in!" He instructed Rachel, his voice authoritative and this wasn’t the same man that was flirting with her moments ago.
"Hurry up!" Mathias shouted and Rachel got to work, she rushed to his side and held the man but what she saw horrified her.
"He was bitten!?" Rachel said, taking a step back because why was he trying to save a person who had been bitten? He was going to die, there was no way to save someone who had been bitten.
"RACHEL!" Mathis shouted but at that moment, he lost his grip on the man and he broke free.
Rachel noticed that someone had rushed in, it was the person who informed Mathias of this.
He was holding a syringe and quickly handed it over to Mathias.
Mathias couldn’t hold him down forever and that was why he was trying to bind him with the straps on the bed.
But thanks to Rachel, he had to make do with Plan B. He rushed towards the man because it was clear that he was in pain.
The man threw something at Mathias but it missed, this created an opening as Mathias lunged forward and injected him with the syringe, this had an immediate effect as he lost consciousness.
"That was a close call," Mathias said but his body wasn’t relaxed.
Rachel noticed that there was a rope or tube wrapped around his forearm, this would explain why they wanted him to go unconscious.
Mathis took out a string of rope made of metal and placed his arm between it.
He began to saw away at it with the rope, it ripped through the flesh and bone like it was nothing.
Rachel realized the urgency and why he did what he did, it was to try and save his life.
She took a step back because Mathias was so dedicated and he had clearly done this before.
It took a few more minutes but Mathias stopped the bleeding and the relief on his face was telling.
"I’m sorry for screaming earlier, I didn’t take into account that this must have been your first time," Mathias said, taking off the rubber sanitary gloves he had on.
He proceeded to strap the patient to the bed but if he had severed the hand that was infected then what was the point of binding him?
"It’s fine. What you did was amazing... But would that be enough to save them?" Rachel asked.
"It wasn’t that amazing, I just saved a life, no biggie. I don’t know how long he has been infected or how far the virus has spread either," Mathias said and Rachel realized that this was a safety measure in case the virus had spread more than they anticipated.
Rachel giggled at his earlier response, she hated to admit it but she was impressed by what she just saw. Rachel was growing to respect Mathias.
"I never properly introduce myself. I’m Mathias," He said with a wide smile.

Allison returned to work and the whispers were loud but she could tolerate it because Bella was with her.
Bella looked menacing due to her muscular build, everyone assumed she was a fighter of some sort and this diverted the attention that Allison would otherwise be getting.
Allison was glad and relieved by this, she looked over her shoulder and noticed that the pits were being dug to go deeper.
Allison knew why this was being done, they had found a fault in their defence system and rectified it.
They had a line that gunned down the zombies that came close as they did this.
Bella noticed that they looked panicky but that was to be expected considering what happened the day before.
"What the fuck happened here?" Bella asked Allison but Allison didn’t bother responding because of the tone that Bella had used.
"The zombies... I thought I imagined it but..." Allison paused.
"But what?" Bella asked but she got no response.
Allison couldn’t explain it but these zombies were far too eager unlike the zombies they had encountered thus far but this was to be expected for something within the community that proved to be more of a threat than the zombies.
