Chapter 215: What Are You?
Chapter 215: What Are You?
Jason couldn’t believe what he was seeing but he knew that he had nothing to lose by following this zombie.
This was the first time he saw a zombie like this showing that it wasn’t just acting on muscle memory alone but knew how to communicate.
It was almost like... it was alive but there was no way that could be the case.
Jason began to wonder just what else these fragments could do, Dimitris knew that attempting to fight the zombie would be pointless considering that it didn’t kill him.
Jason nodded and this told Dimitris that it was best to follow this zombie’s command.
He didn’t know what the zombie had in mind but it could be mistaking Jason as another zombie.
Jason had established that it didn’t hunt other zombies with the fragment with the earlier occurrence when they drove down that road.
But after engaging Jason in combat briefly, it just stopped and luckily, this allowed Jason to deactivate his skill and preserve his stamina.
"Chronos, what the fuck is this?" Jason asked.
[[Your heart isn’t beating]]
Chronos informed Jason and this surprised him, he had to place his hand on his chest to see if this was true and to his utmost surprise, it was.
Jason wanted to freak out because this would mean he was dead so how the fuck was he still standing?
"How could I have died!?" Jason thought to himself.
[[You’re not dead, I lowered your pulse but thanks to the Nexus skill that was active, it allowed your body to function temporarily while in a death state]]
Jason knew that he got this skill after he had momentarily died so it would make sense that it has some association with death.
However, this was the first time he saw the true potential of this skill because it allowed him to defy death momentarily.
Jason noticed that it must have found this out when he grabbed the leg, this was why it just stood still.
It no longer perceived Jason as a threat but what happened if he deactivated his skill before then?
The answer was simple, he would have been dead.
Chronos allowed his heartbeat just before he deactivated his skill but at a much slower pace.
The zombie thought it was talking to an evolved undead but this told Jason that the other three zombies he saw on his radar must also be capable of communicating.
Jason was gathering invaluable information but it became clear that the longer this apocalypse dragged on, the slimmer the chance of humanity surviving became.
The zombie walked and walked, Jason trailed behind it but he couldn’t help but acknowledge how useful Chronos was.
He would be dead if Chronos didn’t do what it did.
They soon came to a stop and Jason’s heart dropped.
He saw multiple corpses lying on the ground but there was something distinctive about all of them.
They had no face, judging from the state of their body they have been this way for quite some time.
They were shriveled up and dried up showing that it has been months since they died but why weren’t they turned?
Jason watched the zombie drop Dimitris down, the only reason Dimitris was alive was because he had managed to wrap his wound.
This must have been the zombie responsible for that wound, Dimitris had lost consciousness during the journey.
Jason wondered what the zombie wished to do with him but that was all it did, it just dropped him and walked off.
"What the fuck?" Jason thought but he assumed that the zombie wished to do with Dimitris what it had done with these corpses.
Jason slowly walked towards Dimitris to not spook the zombie that operated solely on sight.
He had heard about evolved zombies but what if a horde was composed entirely of zombies turned by this evolved? That would be the nightmare of anyone.
Jason shuddered at the thought but his objective remained the same- get Dimitris out of here.
He closed in on Dimitris and began to wonder if he was dead or unconscious.
The piece of cloth he used as a tourniquet was soaked through with blood.
Jason was finally within grabbing distance and the zombie that brought him here was nowhere in sight.
Jason kicked him slightly to get him to wake up, it was now or never.
This was their chance to bolt but he also realized that the zombie could easily find Dimitris due to the wound he had acquired.
They may not have their sight but their ears and sense of smell were impeccable.
Jason needed to think of something because this zombie was superior in terms of speed.
"That’s strange, you aren’t dead," A voice said but this couldn’t be the zombie.
Jason immediately jumped back, his eyes settling on the person before him.
It was a hooded figure but what was more alarming was that the zombie that had taken Dimitris was standing right behind this person.
"Watch out!" Jason exclaimed but he noticed the zombie was unresponsive.
It didn’t perceive this person as a threat and this made Jason fear for the worst.
"What are you?" Jason asked and the hood came down. It was a person just like him.
There was no doubt that this person before him was human because the fragment might help with evolution but it didn’t stop the stench of death.
"Interesting..." The person said and Jason pointed the gun at this individual.
He couldn’t tell if this was a man or woman just by looking at them but gender was the least of his worries right now.
"You’re like me, aren’t you?" The person asked and this caught Jason off guard and Jason realized what the person meant by this the moment his map began to beep.
This was to alert him of a nearby fragment but that would mean it was within this person.
Jason wondered if he was the only one and this was confirmation that he wasn’t.
"Chronos, what is going on?" Jason questioned his system but he also remembered that Chronos didn’t answer him when he asked if he was the only one in the past.
[[This human has assimilated and gained full control of the treatment within their possession]]
Chronos informed Jason and Jason didn’t even know what to think of this.
"You don’t need to worry about Jerry over here, he’s harmless..." The person reassured Jason.
The person began to walk towards Jason but Jason cocked his gun, ready to let loose a volley of bullets should they take another step.
"I wouldn’t do that if I were you..." The person muttered and Jason soon noticed he was surrounded by zombies but once again, these zombies were motionless and unresponsive.
"Are they controlling them!?" Jason thought but quickly pushed this out of his mind.
[[I believe that is the case, I feel the same fragment signature coming from this person as I do the zombie]]
Chronos responded, confirming Jason’s wild thought wasn’t as wild as he assumed.
"How’re you controlling them?" Jason questioned and this person looked surprised by this question.
Jason began to realize that the fragment he had sensed earlier wasn’t of zombies but of this person and three others.
This zombie couldn’t hide its aura, it simply didn’t have the fragment to begin.
Jason knew that sub evolved zombies retained certain traits of the one that turned them, was that why it was able to communicate because this person was the one that turned it?
"You can’t?" The person asked and Jason’s face contorted, the person said it so casually like it was a normal thing but did this possibility exist all along?
"Stoo fucking with me! What do you want with Dimitris!?" Jason barked but his aggression made the zombies growl in turn.
"Dimitris? So that’s his name..." The person said as they continued to walk and Jason knew that their person wasn’t scared because there was no way that he would open fire.
He might be able to get away but Dimitris couldn’t.
"Chronos, what did he mean by I can’t? Does he have a fucking system too!?" Jason asked Chronos.
[[This is new information to me, I’m scattered around so they must possess the part of my that holds this knowledge]]
Chronos said; this wasn’t entirely a lie as part of knowledge was also the reason this whole apocalypse started in the first place.
It was because the Doctor didn’t hold the piece that Jason currently held or he might have been able to perfect the formula that started this mess.
But Jason had now discovered that the pieces of Chronos weren’t just to make him whole but to regain the knowledge it had lost.
This was getting a lot more complex yet it made a lot more sense, the pieces were slowly falling into place.
Jason’s eyes narrowed because he knew now that he had to have that fragment by all means necessary.
It wasn’t just for Chrome but if he could possess this power then they wouldn’t need to worry about zombies ever again.
Jason began to wonder if each shard held a different part of Chronos and why he hadn’t manifested some of the skills that the zombies before him had.
