Chapter 272: Season Finale
Chapter 272: Season Finale
Jason realized that he might have no choice, this parasite was far too strong and he could hear the gunshots in the distance gradually reduce, this told him that they were falling one by one.
It would only be a matter of time until everyone was dead.
Jason looked up at the moon and took a deep breath as he knew what he had to do.
This parasite was the core, which means that Jason could find a way to keep all under zombies in check.
"Chronos, I give up," Jason muttered to his system.
[[I don’t quite understand what you mean.]]
Chronos responded but Jason let go of the weapon in his hand; with this, he allowed his aura to leak and in doing so, allowed himself to be found.
[[Are you sure this is the right choice?]]
Chronos requested but Jason didn’t know any other way and he had already destroyed his relationship with Rachel, maybe this was for the best.
Lillian finally saw him for the monster that he was and the look on her face left a mental scar on Jason, she looked at him like he was a monster.
"I’m sure..." Jason responded and before long, he was surrounded by multiple zombies, these were evolved zombies capable of being spoken through.
Jason noticed that they weren’t tense or moving to attack him, it was almost like it knew Jason had given up because he truly meant those words.
"Have we finally reached an understanding, human?" One of the zombies spoke to which Jason nodded.
"But I have a condition, if you do not agree to it, I will destroy the fragment in my right now and you will never be whole again," Jason warned.
He had the means to as he kicked up the sword he had dropped earlier due to it being placed on top of his right foot.
"What do you desire?" It asked and Jason decided to sacrifice himself to save everyone else.
"I want you to leave the people in this area alone, no zombie should come near them or even attempt to harm them," Jason gave his conditions but he also knew that it could always agree to it and simply go back on its word when Jason was no more but what were a few humans compared to the billions that it would have control over?
It sounded like a trade too good to be passed up and it agreed to Jason’s condition.
Jason’s subconscious had become one with Chronos so even if they were to become one, a piece of Jason would remain.
"Follow us," It commanded and Jason looked back at the community because this could very well be the last time that he saw it.
But this was a choice he had made and he wasn’t going back on it because the thing about this outbreak was that there would never be a scarcity of zombies, each passing day, they doubled in numbers and in no time, they would become the new apex predator once humans go extinct.
"Farewell..." Jason muttered under his breath before following it and he could hear cheers of victory in the distance telling him that this parasite intended to honor its end of the bargain.
-
Rachel was glad that the worst was over and Lillian was safe, Jason had kept his word to her.
She was grateful to him and realized that she might have been a little too hard on him.
Rachel searched for him as they were busy gathering up the dead to burn but there was nothing.
"Are you looking for Jason?" Lillian asked her sister and Rachel immediately turned to her.
"Yes! Have you seen him?" Rachel asked but Lillian threw up the moment she remembered the gruesome scene that he had left behind.
"Lillian! What’s wrong? Are you okay!?" Rachel hurried to her sister’s side.
"Jason... He is a monster!" Lillian said sternly, Rachel could hear the fear in her sister’s voice and realized that she had seen that side of him.
She didn’t bother pressing on but she noticed that she couldn’t see the boy anymore.
"Where is the boy?" Rachel asked and Lillian threw up once more.
"T-That bastard... He killed him!" Lillian said, sobbing as she clutched her head.
"I thought he was going to kill me too! I was so scared Rachel!" Lillian sobbed profusely.
This was when Rachel realized something, this was no longer the Jason she knew.
She didn’t need to hear his side of the story or anything of such to come to this conclusion.
But she also knew that Jason wouldn’t do anything to hurt Lillian, even if she couldn’t understand the reason behind his actions.
"I will have no choice but to warn him when I see him," Rachel thought to herself but little did she know, Jason wasn’t returning.
She saw Mariam was safe alongside Shantel and the rest, she was relieved that the casualties didn’t extend to people she knew personally.
A bit selfish but she was allowed to be selfish; where was Jason?
She knew that something had happened between Jason and Mariam but she also knew that this might just be her mind playing tricks on her.
There was no way that Jason would sleep with another person so soon after their fight like it meant nothing.
But she was willing to forgive all of that, all she needed right now was for him to return.
Minutes turned to hours and before she knew it, the sun rose and Jason was nowhere in sight.
"Are you okay, you haven’t slept all night..." Shantel spoke to her, observing her for the majority of the night before she went for a brief nap.
"He is not coming back, is he?" Rachel asked with a sorrowful look on her face, the reality dawned on her and Shantel knew who she was talking about.
"We cannot say. All we can do is make sure he has a home to return to," Shantel said, trying to instil some optimism into Rachel as she knew the alternative was much worse.
And that was the death of Jason Abbot.
