Chapter 556 - 548: Guilty Conscience
Chapter 556 - 548: Guilty Conscience
Lin Youning knew she had been asleep for three days, and everyone at home was worried. So, no one objected. Although she was worried about Brother Zong, she didn’t want to burden those around her, so she agreed.
Gu Yifeng secretly breathed a sigh of relief and instructed Shanmoi and the others to bring the food. They served old broth. After just one sip, Lin Youning happily exclaimed, "Is this pigeon broth? It must have been simmered for more than five hours, and it must be Nanny Wang who made it."
"Knowing your picky taste, Nanny Wang has been simmering a pot every day, not knowing when you would wake up, so it has been prepared. Nanny Wang is also taking care of Brother Zong, which is tiring for her. For Nanny Wang’s sake, you should drink more broth and rest well, and take care of your health to justify her thoughtful care for you." Gu Yifeng said as he wiped her mouth with a handkerchief. "Drink slowly, there’s a big bowl left; no one will snatch it from you. Drink some broth and then eat something later, so your stomach can handle it."
"Big brother, I’m sorry for worrying you all. I didn’t expect things to turn out this way. I don’t know why I slept for so many days. I’ve been thinking that I need to be well so I can have the energy to search for Brother Zong, but I didn’t expect this to happen." Lin Youning felt her heart ache seeing how cautiously her big brother behaved.
"Silly girl, don’t think about it anymore. It’s not your fault; it’s mine for not taking better care of you and Brother Zong at this time." Gu Yifeng felt even more heartbroken at heart.
Lin Youning handed the bowl to Shanmoi and shook her head as she let her big brother finish wiping her mouth before speaking, "Big brother did nothing wrong. Who would have thought Sister Yue would do such a thing? But she herself was a pitiable little one, passing away at such a young age. I actually felt sympathy for her, as she left this world so young. We can also blame it on Mrs. Kong; she had better things going on at Prince Xian’s Mansion. Why did she have to do it? I don’t understand what she was thinking. Now that Sister Yue is gone, will her conscience be at ease?"
"Why would her conscience be uneasy? Even when the Duchess from Duke Mansion passed away, Mrs. Kong didn’t seem to grieve or be troubled. She lost her conscience long ago, only thinking about herself and willing to sacrifice anything to fulfill her desires." Gu Yifeng’s face filled with disgust when talking about Mrs. Kong.
Now Brother Zong is still not found, and we aren’t even sure if he’s still in this world, yet Mrs. Kong is alive and is still deceiving Sister Ning. How can Gu Yifeng not feel hatred?
Now they had to endure and focus on getting Sister Ning well, while Brother Zong could only be searched for in secret.
Lin Youning felt her big brother’s hatred and gently held his hand, "Big brother, forget it. Now that Brother Zong has been found, don’t worry about unrelated people. When Sister Yue did what she did, I already guessed it was Mrs. Kong. I thought about keeping it from you with Sister Ling, so you wouldn’t worry, but it didn’t stay hidden, and you found out."
"Silly girl, how could I not know what you were thinking? Promise big brother, don’t hide things like this anymore; speak up if something happens. You see how keeping it to yourself made you sleep for three days and worry everyone around you—something you wouldn’t want to see, right?" Gu Yifeng’s heart almost broke at Sister Ning’s words. "As for Mrs. Kong, you don’t need to think about them. Stay in the mansion, let them stay there too until evidence is found. Otherwise, won’t everyone think they can do whatever they want in our household?"
Lin Youning certainly wouldn’t plead for Mrs. Kong but instead thought of Mrs. Gao, "How did the Duchess from the Duke Mansion pass away?"
"It also involved her and Brother De’s involvement. Otherwise, what else could have given Sister Yue such courage? When I went to the Duke Mansion with people and found out, she admitted it and hit the wall. Brother De at that time was still shifting all the blame to Mrs. Gao. I don’t know how the second brother raised such heartless and cold-blooded children. Never mind them; such children aren’t worth feeling heartache for. They themselves don’t care." Gu Yifeng naturally wouldn’t mention that he had been forcing the Duke Mansion to give an explanation.
He didn’t want Sister Ning to see his bloodthirsty side. Over the years, he had never shown that side in front of her, primarily to avoid scaring her.
Now, the situation with the Duchess from the Duke Mansion had passed, and Gu Yifeng naturally wouldn’t bring it up.
Lin Youning was silent for a moment after hearing this.
Gu Yifeng held her tightly in his arms, "This isn’t our fault. When they did these things, hurting others, they should have known the consequences. Now, would you like something to eat? Let’s have someone bring porridge."
Lin Youning knew her big brother didn’t want her to dwell on the matter, so she didn’t say much. She just nodded. It was already late at night, but everyone in the mansion was alert due to her waking up.
After eating two small bowls of chicken broth porridge, a boiled egg, and some side dishes, Lin Youning felt tired. Gu Yifeng was a bit worried, "Are you going to sleep?"
He was genuinely afraid that if she fell asleep, it would be several days before she’d wake up again.
Lin Youning smiled as she leaned into her big brother’s embrace, "I’m just a bit tired, and since it’s nighttime, I can’t go back to sleep for three more days after sleeping for three days."
After saying this, she blinked, "It’s midnight now; we should sleep, shouldn’t we? Or is big brother not going to sleep?"
Gu Yifeng didn’t want Sister Ning to worry but couldn’t help feeling anxious. He lay down on the bed, still clothed, "Sleep, big brother will stay with you."
But Lin Youning didn’t close her eyes, "I’ll watch big brother sleep first."
Gu Yifeng agreed and then closed his eyes.
Lin Youning’s eyes showed a hint of distress, and she took a deep breath before opening her eyes again. She’s not foolish and had understood something. Brother Zong who was brought back wasn’t really him. Perhaps they didn’t know that when Brother Zong was born, besides looking the same as in the past life, he had a small red birthmark behind his ear, which assured her it was Brother Zong.
Once again, he came to be her son.
However, just recently, when she pretended to look unintentionally, there was no such mark behind the ear.
Also, that slightly contradictory attitude of her big brother, she had considered many things and even felt angry.
But in the end, there was no reason to blame them. These are her family, and they did this for her good. She slept for three days—how could it not worry everyone?
Lin Youning closed her eyes, telling herself that she must take care of her health, so she could search for Brother Zong.
