Chapter 44 The Calm Before the Storm
Chapter 44 The Calm Before the Storm
The moment Aunt Silin stepped into the blacksmith's shop, her steps faltered slightly.
The room was a mess.
The fire in the forging furnace was still burning intermittently.
She glanced around the room and saw Virgil and Gold squatting by the wood-burning stove with their backs to the door.
A whole sheep's head was prominently displayed on the food table.
There was also a large half-sheep hanging on the shelf next to it!
Looking at the tender, pinkish-red mutton and smelling the rich aroma of meat in the air, Aunt Silin unconsciously swallowed.
Upon seeing Aunt Slynn enter, Gold and Virgil, who had been nonchalant, quickly stood up and greeted her.
"Auntie Slin is here!"
"Ah... I just came to see you all..."
"I wanted to bring you some fish, but I didn't expect you to already be having dinner!" Aunt Slin said with a smile.
Gold and his companion stood up and made way for her, and Aunt Slin immediately noticed the thing simmering on the wood-fired stove!
A large earthenware pot of stewed mutton!
Aunt Silin's face was full of surprise. These three boys had actually stewed half a lamb!
Hearing that Aunt Slin had come to help them with their catch again, God's face lit up with joy. Thinking that they could finally have food, he instinctively declined.
"Auntie Slin, thank you so much! Now we can finally have food. We won't need your help anymore..."
Before he could finish speaking, Virgil patted his arm, interrupting him:
"Alright, stop standing there, quickly get Auntie Silin a bowl of hot food!"
"Yes, yes, yes!" Roger quickly echoed.
"Auntie Slin hasn't had dinner yet, has she? Let's eat together!"
"No...no..."
Aunt Slin was verbally refusing, but before she could finish speaking, God had already shoved a full bowl of mutton into her hands...
Gold's actions were swift and decisive, effectively shutting down all of Aunt Slin's instinctive refusals.
"This is stewed by Roger. We only found out he could cook these last couple of days! Aunt Slin, you should try it!" Virgil explained from the side.
"this……"
Looking at the large bowl of mutton in her hand, Aunt Silin was surprised, but her face gradually filled with a smile.
Being respected always brings joy...
Virgil remained as approachable as ever, making Aunt Slin feel no awkwardness whatsoever.
Then, looking at God, after scooping her a large bowl full, he went about his business as usual, eating heartily by himself, which made her mouth water.
Aunt Silin also let go, abandoning all sorts of miscellaneous concerns.
"Then I won't stand on ceremony!"
She picked up a wooden spoon, scooped up a piece of mutton with the skin on, and put it in her mouth. The meat was tender and flavorful, with a rich and mellow taste, and it didn't have the gamey smell she remembered!
Aunt Silin wondered if she hadn't eaten it in years and had forgotten how it tasted...
Seeing that Aunt Slin had also started eating, Roger and the others immediately started eating heartily as well.
Rough movements, wolfing down food
Gold ate with smacking sounds, his beard covered in broth...
The bowl was overflowing, but Aunt Slin ate less than half of it before God piled a full spoonful of mutton into her bowl again…
God had filled her cup again!
Aunt Silin was slightly taken aback.
"This...this is way too much!"
"Don't worry, there's plenty!"
As he spoke, God tilted the pot of mutton that was still mostly left in the earthenware jar to show Aunt Slin, and then filled a large bowl for himself.
As the piping hot mutton chunks entered her mouth, Aunt Slin unconsciously thought of Gis.
She wondered if she should save some for her son Giss, so she could bring some back for him to try...
Thinking this, she was too embarrassed to ask for some directly. Her gaze fell on the bowl full of mutton in her hands, and she gradually slowed down her eating...
She wanted to save the bowl in her hand for her son!
Gold wolfed down another large bowl of food, but when he turned around, he saw that Aunt Slin hadn't eaten much.
"Auntie Slin, eat up, there's plenty!"
"I'm stuffed!
I'm too old to eat meat anymore!
Unlike you young people, being young is great!
Seeing that Gold looked like he hadn't eaten enough and wanted a third bowl, she sighed.
"I see!"
"Then you can take the rest home and enjoy it at your leisure!"
……
After a simple dinner,
Roger found a container and poured out all the fresh fish and river shrimp from Aunt Slin's basket.
Since it was a thoughtful gift from an older woman, there's no need to be overly polite, otherwise it would seem distant.
Seeing that Roger and the others didn't mind and accepted the catch, Aunt Slin breathed a sigh of relief.
As she left, she carried the bowl of unfinished mutton in her left hand, and her basket was filled with a large piece of mutton leg!
Virgil cut off the hind leg of the hanging half-sheep, along with a large piece of meat from the sheep's rump, and gave it to Aunt Slin.
At first, Aunt Slin kept declining, until Roger asked her to help him buy a few more sheep...
These three kids are eating meat as their staple food!
……
Xipo Village
This large village on the west bank of East Lake is currently experiencing a devastating disaster.
The ground was littered with the haphazardly laid corpses of male villagers, and severed limbs were scattered everywhere...
Pirates clad in chainmail and studded leather armor moved about among the houses in the village.
Valuable valuables were gathered in the open space at the village entrance, livestock were forcibly led out, and various weapons were collected into a pile...
The young women were all driven to the village entrance, their clothes torn to shreds, and some were completely naked.
Among these women, none were old; the last old woman hid in the cellar, but was still found by the pirates.
They cut off her hands and sealed the cellar completely, trapping her inside to death.
At the village entrance, Stan the Broken-Spine Man stood silently, holding a giant axe.
Four pirate raiders stood on either side, pinning a burly man dressed in a green cloak and chainmail firmly to the boulder.
The man was already bleeding from his head, and even though his hands and feet were bound, he was still struggling violently, letting out suppressed and angry roars.
"You vermin and bastards of the Western Sea! You will surely be punished! The lord of Mist-shrouded City will never let you go and will bury you utterly on this land!"
"I curse you! May the storm tear your ships apart, and may your clan be wiped out forever!"
Amidst the man's desperate roars and curses, his chainmail and clothing were stripped off, leaving his back exposed.
"Chief, everything is ready!"
The pirate raider, his face full of obsequiousness, reported to Stan standing beside him.
Seeing that everything was ready, Stan stepped forward, carrying the axe in his hand.
The man caught a glimpse of Stan approaching with an axe out of the corner of his eye, and his whole body trembled involuntarily. He muttered words only he could hear: "No..."
The man's murmurs were desperate and helpless... Even the most fearless warrior will feel fear when death truly arrives!
"The Lord of Storms guided us here!"
Anyone who dares to block the path of our Kare clan will meet a terrible end!
The sea is our territory, and our Kare clan will never die out!
Stan spoke sharply, his eyes flashing with malice. He raised his axe and began to strike the man's spine with each blow!
The man cried out in pain, his body convulsed, and then he completely lost consciousness.
The hammer blows fell one after another until the man was completely silent. Stan then turned the axe blade and cleaved him in two!
Stan was not only a "spinal fissure man", but also a "back-opening man"!
Many of the women gathered to the side watched helplessly as Yar, from their village, was executed.
They trembled all over, their cries caught in their throats, and all that remained in their hearts was endless fear.
……
The village behind him hadn't been burned; that would have been too conspicuous. Stan, carrying his blood-stained giant axe, went to the woods north of the village.
On the clearing at the edge of the woods, several headless corpses were neatly arranged.
"Brother, the matter is resolved!" he shouted into the woods.
The next moment, countless pirate figures rose up from the dense forest, a dark, overwhelming mass...
One-eyed Godot stepped out from the crowd.
"Big brother, I've taken care of everything!" Stan repeated again.
"Be more careful next time! Seven or eight of them almost escaped!"
"Yes, brother!" Stan said, glancing again at the headless corpses on the ground. He knew that his brother had cleaned up the mess for him.
He quickly looked up and asked respectfully, "Brother, what should we do next?"
