Chapter 850 Nick Fury Has a Nonsense Plan
Peter, watching the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents bustling about inside the bomb shelter, asked curiously, "How many people are here in total?"
"Not many, just over eighty. Their most important role was in quickly rebuilding the basic framework of S.H.I.E.L.D. after its collapse." Fury said as he led Peter forward. Peter looked around; the walls were made of thick metal, creaking underfoot.
He couldn't help but ask, "Has this place been operating all along? Did S.H.I.E.L.D. anticipate this day from the very beginning?"
"—No, it only started operating after the millennium. My predecessor, whom I can confirm is Alexander Pierce, a Hydra executive, and his predecessor, my father Jack Fury, oh right, he was white, and all the previous directors of S.H.I.E.L.D. didn't even know about this place."
As Fury spoke, he walked to a large metal door, turned the valve lock, opened the metal door, and went inside, sitting down in an old chair. "Besides me, only Peggy Carter knows about this place. No one else, including the builders, knows about it. A significant number of them have had their memories erased."
In other words, this place was a new central hub specifically set up to prepare for a full-scale war with Hydra. Although Peter had some doubts about whether everyone here was truly trustworthy, the place was at least structurally sound enough to prevent Ultron from annihilating it instantly.
Therefore, Peter asked Fury with great anticipation, "Do you have any ideas on how to deal with Ultron?"
"Yes, we can use Kang's time machine to travel back in time and kill Pym before he creates Ultron, thus preventing Ultron's birth."
Peter was a bit tense. This plan was the same one Wolverine came up with at the beginning of the comics' "Age of Ultron," but while it wasn't bad, it was utterly useless and rubbish. If Pym had been eliminated before Ultron was born, then all the subsequent events that required Ultron—such as the Green Goblin AI incident, Nimrod, and even the fight against Kang the Conqueror—would have completely failed, and the future that emerged might not have been any safer than the present.
Looking at it now, if we really want to eliminate Ultron, we should kill Mephisto, who brought Ultron to the present. But then again, if Earth 616 could completely eliminate Mephisto now, what would we have to fear from Ultron?
"Is there anything else?"
"That's it. This is the only plan I can think of to counter Ultron. He will definitely destroy the other two Ultrons on Christmas Eve, and although I don't know why, he seems very confident." Fury had obviously learned about the relevant information from other sources and came to the same conclusion as Peter: "And by then, all of Ultron's logic will be even more impeccable, making it even more impossible for you to destroy him with logic."
Peter took a deep breath.
"So you have absolutely no solution?"
"I have a plan, which is to trigger a complete technological regression. I know Stark has a plan to shut down the internet globally, but that won't work because you don't know if Ultron has a backup somewhere. If he has, then as long as we reboot the network, we will still be facing a brand new, or even more powerful, Ultron."
Ultron would live forever alongside the Internet unless the entire hardware and software of the Internet were destroyed and a new Internet built from scratch. But that sounds even more illogical. How can you guarantee that the whole world will obey you by smashing all network-connected data storage devices?
Peter sighed; it seemed that Ultron was truly beyond help.
Or perhaps—
Fury paused for a moment, then looked at Peter: "Ultron is powerful because he can exist throughout the entire Internet, which also means that his computing power has an upper limit in the Earth environment. In that case, theoretically, we can eliminate him by continuously compressing the range of his computing power."
"Pym also considered this. Avengers Ultron would mobilize all available computing power to resist Evangelism Ultron and seize global computing resources as much as possible. In that case, he could mark out a safe zone of computing power. If we have a way to continuously interrupt Ultron's calculations, we can allow Avengers Ultron to seize more computing resources."
This plan has two flaws. First, how to prevent a future counterattack from Ultron, the Avengers? Second, how to ensure that Ultron's computing power can be continuously depleted? Ultron certainly has a plan to deal with entities that can interfere with his plans, including S.O.R.D., Thor, and Magneto.
Although Peter had absolutely no idea what he was supposed to do.
Fury paused to think for a moment, then countered Peter's question: "Why not stab that charlatan in the back when he's eating his own brother? Wouldn't that have been easier and less stressful?"
Peter was speechless for a moment. He thought about it for a while and then realized that this was indeed the case, but Pym only mentioned this point when introducing the current plan.
Does Pym intend to have Ultron iterate again? Why?
Peter frowned, then a possibility came to mind: Pym needed a more advanced, further evolved Ultron to carry out some kind of plan, and this plan must be against Ultron, and most likely to prevent the Avengers from betraying him.
"Pym and Vision —"
"Pym's vision?" Fury looked at Peter. "What's on your mind now?"
"Pym most likely has a plan that can help us solve the problem, or at least find a way to fight Ultron. However, I'm not sure if Ultron knows about it. And on the other hand, this plan—"
Peter hesitated for a moment, looked at Fury, and then looked elsewhere. Fury understood what he was worried about: "Don't worry, there are no listening devices."
"Pym's plan is to modify Jim Hammond's remains, making them the host for Avenger Ultron. This would allow Ultron to become a person," and would require an additional iteration, so that Ultron, with human-like emotions and thought processes, would become a true ally of humanity.
Fury nodded, then understood why Spider-Man hesitated: "But this plan is inhumane. He's a former superhero, he shouldn't be treated like this, right? Especially since he's Captain America's old comrade."
Peter nodded.
"Well then, let's try a different approach. I'll give you something: Spider-Man. Go and give it to Pym."
Fury didn't specify what it was, only describing what it was: "If Pym can use that thing, then his creation of this vision" wasn't a human-transforming Ultron, but rather an upgrade of himself, Jim Hammond, using Ultron."
"Or rather, rebirth."
