Chapter 1074 1050: Maybe a Lot of People Want You Dead
The guard walked while explaining the prison rules to Ren Feng.
"The biggest rule in this prison is that there are no rules. Whatever happens between you and the other inmates, as long as it's not a big deal, we don't care. Just don't bother us."
"By the book: there's daily yard time, once a month you do labor, you go to sleep on time when the bell rings, and you eat three meals in the cafeteria."
"As for everything else, stay here long enough and you'll figure it out."
Ren Feng smiled. "I won't be staying long. I've got things to do next week."
The guard turned back and looked at Ren Feng like he was an idiot. "To be honest, ever since I started here, I haven't seen anyone walk out of this prison alive."
"Not even one?" Ren Feng glanced around. A burly guy in prison uniform walking toward him raised a middle finger.
"There are, but they're all corpses."
The guard said, "With the Buddha sitting in here, there's no way a breakout happens. You'd better drop that thought. The Buddha is not someone you want to mess with. He's a hundred times scarier than this prison."
The guard led Ren Feng through an iron door, and when he looked up, it opened into an extremely spacious area, several stories high. All around, small cells were partitioned by iron doors and railings, with inmates inside.
Besides that, there were also countless inmates moving freely in this hall. Seeing a guard bring in a new face, they all started whistling.
"Fweee!"
A sharp whistle cut through the air.
"Hey, fresh meat, you look pretty tender!"
"Didn't think they'd send us a newbie this fast. Hey, rookie, you wanna stay alive in here?"
Ren Feng's gaze calmly swept across the inmates' faces. Some watched him from behind the bars, some who were playing ball looked over with mocking eyes.
"He's the one the Buddha told us to 'take care of'?"
A few inmates' eyes lit up, clearly tempted.
"No mistake. He's the only one coming in today."
A smile tugged at Ren Feng's lips and he lightly shook his head.
"This is your room. You'll be living here from now on."
The guard pointed at the cell that held only a single bed.
"If you don't know some of the rules, just do whatever everyone else is doing."
With that, the guard was about to leave.
"Wait, do me a favor and bring the Buddha a message." Ren Feng turned to him. "Tell him I can only stay here a week. Ask him to hurry it up. I'll be gone after that."
The guard looked at Ren Feng like he was completely brain-dead, muttering inside: is this guy full-on insane?
Even so, he still went to see the Buddha.
"A week?"
A smile appeared again on the Buddha's face. "What a shame. I'm afraid he won't last a week."
Ren Feng walked out of the cell block. Not all the inmates were held here; there were three buildings in total. According to the guard earlier, this was just the lowest-level one.
"Hey, newbie!"
Ren Feng looked down and saw someone below calling out to him.
"What'd you do to get in here?"
"Pissed off the Liou Family, that's how I got in." Ren Feng answered with a smile.
"The Liou Family?" The inmates froze for a second, and once it registered, their expressions shifted.
"Not bad, you even dare offend the Liou Family?"
"No choice. Liou Yushan's hands were too itchy, so I just crippled him and let him lie in a hospital bed for a few weeks."
With that, Ren Feng jumped straight down from the third floor. The inmates who saw this all stared dumbly. Three stories wasn't that high, but an ordinary person couldn't pull that off.
"Newbie, you'd better watch yourself. Lot of people might want your head." One guy laughed loudly.
The others laughed along, but their eyes were cold as blades.
No doubt, the Buddha's offer had them hooked. Kill this man and they could get out of this damned place.
The inmate who'd spoken earlier walked over, smiling as he patted Ren Feng on the shoulder. "Newbie, you gotta be careful. In this prison, there isn't a single good person."
"I know."
Ren Feng was all smiles as well.
"Then I'm relieved. People's hearts are unfathomable, you know."
The inmate kept smiling as he patted Ren Feng, but in the blink of an eye his hand balled into a fist, aiming to smash directly into Ren Feng's skull.
Only, that fist got caught midair. The smile on his face suddenly froze.
"Thanks for the reminder."
Still smiling, Ren Feng gripped his wrist. "People's hearts sure are unpredictable. But I can handle it. No need for you to worry."
Suddenly, Ren Feng's face went cold. He twisted hard, and that wrist in his hand gave off a sharp crack of bone.
"Aaagh!"
The inmate screamed. Under Ren Feng's grip he couldn't take the pain; his whole body dropped to one knee. The other inmates in the block all turned to look. The originally noisy space grew strangely quiet.
"Since you're the first one to remind me about this, I won't kill you."
Ren Feng smiled and patted his face, then drove a kick into his chest. Amid his shriek, the inmate slammed into the iron fence in the middle, then crashed to the ground and passed out cold.
Seeing everyone staring at him, Ren Feng said with a smile, "Alright, folks, get back to whatever you were doing. I'm just going to have a look around."
He finished and walked off, leaving behind a bunch of inmates with mixed expressions.
"This guy's a bit of a problem." One inmate's face had turned grim.
They had all seen it just now. The way Ren Feng joked around as he struck, that ruthlessness and constant vigilance—none of them could match it.
"Looks like the one the Buddha wants us to deal with isn't so simple."
"Definitely tougher than the last ones. But the offer this time is impossible to refuse. Relax—in prison, making someone die without a trace is way too easy. We've got plenty of ways to do it."
No one spared a glance at the unconscious inmate on the ground. A few of them followed after.
It was yard time. Ren Feng wandered around, and before long he reached the middle of a courtyard surrounded by high walls.
He looked around. The walls were very high, all electrified on top, and in the center stood a tall watchtower with someone on duty at all times.
The security was tight.
The moment Ren Feng stepped into the square, all the nearby inmates looked his way. Their faces were cold, their eyes holding an indescribable glint.
Ren Feng shrugged. Just then, one inmate playing basketball suddenly whipped the ball hard, sending it rocketing straight at Ren Feng.
